What a day…1 July 2018… I couldn’t seem to find the joy of my own 44th birthday. No friends, no family and no party. Just me, my partner and a glass of wine. This should have been a party on its own, but we had been fighting and struggling financially for quite some time. We honestly didn’t know what to do with ourselves anymore.
In the middle of the night, we woke up, had a big argument and decided that we couldn’t carry on like this anymore. A change needed to be made. But what change did we require? A change in jobs? Perhaps a change of wine or just a change of scenery? We needed to get out of our respective comfort zones, but how? Would we have to give up everything? Our home, jobs, family, friends, security…were we really giving this all up? YES! A plan was made at 3 am. We decided to sell up and start a brand new life as digital nomads.
First of all, we compiled a list of all our worldly belongings. These needed to go before we could commit to a digital nomad lifestyle on a tight budget.
Selling everything doesn’t bring an income, but making an income in Europe can be much easier than in South Africa. We decided to take the risk and get started.
The next day we called up our families in the U.K. and the Netherlands and asked if we could crash on their couches to start all over again as teenagers/students. What a relief though! We hope this will be the beginning of an adventure of a lifetime for us.
